TransitionZero joins global grids coordination council to accelerate clean energy infrastructure

Climate analytics non-profit becomes member of COP30 Coordinating Council as 3,000 GW of renewables wait in global connection queues

Partnership

London, 19 May 2026: TransitionZero has joined the Coordinating Council for the Acceleration of Expansion and Resilience of Grids, a global initiative convened by the Green Grids Initiative under the COP30 Action Agenda.

The Council brings together international organisations, development banks, and technical partners to coordinate action on grid infrastructure, widely recognised as a critical bottleneck to the energy transition. Around 3,000 GW of clean energy projects are currently held up in grid connection queues globally, while annual grid investment must double from approximately $300 billion to $600 billion by 2030 to meet climate and energy goals.

Established by Brazil's Ministry of Mines and Energy alongside the COP30 Presidency, the Council serves as a coordination mechanism for aligning efforts across the grids ecosystem. It tracks progress against a comprehensive plan bringing together 102 actions across 12 delivery organisations, matches country development needs with available technical expertise, and supports advocacy for grid infrastructure at key global events.

TransitionZero attended the Council's inaugural meeting in April 2026 and will contribute to ongoing coordination and future working groups. The Council convenes organisations including IRENA, the International Energy Agency, multilateral development banks, and grid technology initiatives to reduce duplication, share learning, and accelerate deployment.

Matt Gray, Co-founder and CEO of TransitionZero, said:

"Grid infrastructure is the foundation of the energy transition, but planning and investment decisions require transparent data and credible analysis. Scenario Builder, our open energy system modelling platform, is designed to support evidence-based grid planning, and we’re pleased to contribute this work through the Coordinating Council’s efforts to accelerate deployment globally."

The Council is supported by the Green Grids Initiative, launched at COP26 and chaired by the UK Government. It works with an ecosystem of over 180 organisations to address systemic challenges preventing grids from being built and upgraded at the pace and scale required.

About TransitionZero

TransitionZero is a climate tech non-profit founded in 2021. TransitionZero builds software to reduce the time to build clean energy at scale. We pioneer open-access and open-source tools that make electricity system modelling more transparent, accessible, and actionable for governments, financiers and grid operators worldwide.

Our flagship tool, Scenario Builder, enables policymakers, planners and investors to rapidly build, analyse and share energy system and electricity grid models without coding expertise or external consultants. Supported by model-ready datasets, training and market insights, our tools strengthen in-house capacity and support resilient, affordable and locally-led energy transitions.

Since launching publicly in October 2025, Scenario Builder spans 16 countries and supports around 500 users from think tanks, government agencies, utilities, system operators, and financial institutions. TransitionZero is entirely grant-funded by leading climate philanthropies, including Google.org, Sequoia Climate Foundation, Bloomberg Philanthropies and the European Climate Foundation, among others.
