TZ-SAM: Solar Asset Mapper
Terms of Use
The Solar Asset Mapper (TZ-SAM) dataset has been made available via TransitionZero to the public to support climate action and encourage further research in identifying solar assets and their capacities globally.
1. Licence
The TZ-SAM data and associated metadata has been made available via TransitionZero under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC 4.0), with the exception of external data sources used to produce the TZ-SAM dataset which are listed below.
This means that anyone is free to use TZ-SAM data in any format for non-commercial purposes only.
2. Attribution
Attribution to TransitionZero is required. You must also clearly indicate if you have made any changes to the TZ-SAM dataset and what these are. Please refer to the suggested citation formats:

For charts, infographics, data visualisations and any other visual content, please add a TransitionZero logo at the bottom of the image. TransitionZero logos can be found in this folder.
3. External Sources
The TZ-SAM dataset includes some data reproduced from the following external sources, which are generally also open but may have different specific terms.
- Satellite imagery is provided by the Sentinel-2A and Sentinel-2B satellites from the European Space Agency (ESA) Copernicus Sentinel mission and is made available through the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem: https://dataspace.copernicus.eu/
- Solar plant geometries for use in model training data are made available by OpenStreetMap: https://www.openstreetmap.org/
- Solar plant geometries used in model validation are created by Kruitwagen et al. (2021): https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-021-03957-7
Before using these data sources, users must review the terms and conditions on the websites of the respective organisations and contact them directly for any clarifications or questions.
It is the sole responsibility of the user to review the terms and conditions for all the above sources prior to using the data. TransitionZero makes no claims or warranties regarding the accuracy, completeness or licensing terms for these datasets.
4. Data Accuracy
The models based on earth observation and machine learning are continually evolving, and are expected to be updated over time and TransitionZero is not responsible for any reliance thereon.
TransitionZero endeavours to ensure that the TZ-SAM dataset is accurate. However, such TZ-SAM data has been (1) modelled using data from third-party sources that are publicly available, or (2) collected from publicly available sources. TransitionZero has no control over any aspects of such data, including its accuracy, timeliness, completeness or consistency.
Users of the TZ-SAM data are advised to exercise caution and evaluate the methodology, data sources, and limitations of the TZ-SAM data. Users are encouraged to contact TransitionZero through info@transitionzero.org in case of any questions or if any errors are identified.
The information made available via TransitionZero is on an “as is” and “as available” basis without any warranty of any kind.
TransitionZero did not select and does not endorse the geographic boundaries, names, and regions shown on maps and in lists, tables, documents, and databases on TZ-SAM. All such information was made using Natural Earth: https://www.naturalearthdata.com/
